A website every family can use.
Pacific Coast Pediatric Surgery wants every parent, grandparent and caregiver to be able to read about our care, reach us and request an appointment, whatever device or assistive technology they use.
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2, Level AA
We build and test this site against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, the standard referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act and California's Unruh Civil Rights Act. Accessibility is part of how the site is designed, written and reviewed, not a layer added afterwards.
Built in from the start
- Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, including the menus, the appointment form, the FAQ panels and the accessibility settings.
- Headings, landmarks, lists and form labels are marked up so screen readers can navigate the page and announce each control.
- Photos and illustrations carry text descriptions; purely decorative images and background videos are hidden from assistive technology.
- Text colors meet the WCAG AA contrast ratio, and a high-contrast mode is available for anyone who needs more.
- Text can be resized up to 200% in the browser without loss of content, and the site honors your operating system's reduced-motion setting.
- Nothing on the site flashes, and auto-playing videos are silent and can be paused with one switch.
Adjust the site to suit you
The round button in the bottom-left corner of every page opens the accessibility settings. Your choices are saved on your device and apply across the whole site.
- Text size
- Three sizes for all copy on the site.
- High contrast
- Replaces the brand gradients with solid, dark backgrounds behind all text.
- Underline links
- Shows an underline on every link, not only on hover.
- Readable font
- Swaps the condensed display typeface for your device's standard font.
- Text spacing
- Adds line, letter and word spacing for easier reading.
- Pause motion
- Stops the animations, the drifting card strip and the background videos.
Where we are still working
- Some headings and buttons sit on the practice's teal-to-blue gradient. Where that background is lighter, white text falls below the AA contrast ratio in the default view. Turn on High contrast in the accessibility settings for a solid dark background behind all text.
- The map on the Contact page is provided by Google Maps. If it is hard to use, the address link beside it opens the same location in the Google Maps app or website, and we are happy to give directions by phone.
- Older articles were brought over from our previous website. We have reviewed their structure, but if you find a page that is hard to read, please tell us and we will fix it.
